Introduction

Welcome to our New World Catacombs guide. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about the Catacombs end-game activity.

What is Catacombs?

The Catacombs is an end-game activity joining the content pool as of Season 10: Nighthaven. The experience takes you on a procedurally generated dungeon-crawling adventure. Each room completion generates a new room, however, you’re also provided roguelite-like features such as power-ups to change the experience further. Each run lasts 30 minutes as a capped timer.

Inside, there is several main loops to the progression of the dungeons and recurring key themes:

  • Twists and turns that allows for future rooms to generate procedurally
  • Boss room encounters that act a bit like a milestone within your run, this can return you back to the original room and continue on your next path to another boss
  • Forking paths
  • Locked gates & key puzzles

New World Catacombs Gameplay Flow

This dungeon-crawling mode is an experience made for 1-3 players. As a result, the experience is a speedy, intimate experience compared to larger scale activities like Raids.

Each room is a new experience, with various rulesets, mobs, bosses and more. You’ll have a maximum of 30 minutes to explore, push and loot for rewards.

Before the 30 minutes is over, you’ll have to look for a way to extract to secure everything you’ve earned mid-dungeon. However, the further into the dungeon you go, the more difficult it becomes. You’ll also have a limited amount of Instant Respawns per run. As a result, explore each room at your own peril, clear them, check on the time, and get out when possible.

Depending on how the seed is generated, you could end up getting as far as 100 rooms! Prepare yourself for some deep diving adventures.

Aspects

Aspects are power-ups you can find and enhance yourself with throughout the dungeon, there is 18 total that change your combat experience.

Ascension

Ascending in the Catacombs is possible after every mini-boss defeat in a room. Each mini-boss spawns an Ascension Statue that provides you with a damage and health boost at the cost of 100 Splintered Souls per Ascension stack. This upgrade is vital for you and your team to succeed in the Catacombs.

Difficulty

Difficult in Catacombs is made in stages, for example:

  • Difficulty Level: 1
  • Difficulty Level: 2
  • Difficulty Level: 3
  • Difficulty Level: 4
  • Difficulty Level: 5
  • Difficulty Level: 6

The way each difficulty level triggers is based on when you defeat a major boss, but also how many. For example, if you’re Difficulty Level: 1 at the start of the Catacombs and defeat your first major boss – you’ll now be at Difficulty Level: 2. As a result of increased difficulty, each room has tougher enemies – including the major bosses!

Strategy

There is many options for players to strategize and escape from the Catacombs in New World. One of the most popular ways to navigate the Catacombs is to have each player in a 3-player party split up and clear rooms solo. This is because it speeds up overall clear time, but also allows you to discover all the boss locations as fast as possible. From there, you can use the fact the beginning of the Catacombs is Level 1 difficulty (until you kill a major boss), level up as much as possible via Ascension and then finally – cherry pick your way through the bosses and escape. Be warned, however, as this is not a simple strategy and requires some decent PVE gear and player preparation.

Catacombs Rewards

Each run awards you a certain amount of Cursed Sterling and Cursed Crowns. Both of these currencies can be spent at the Catacombs Vendor in the Tularest Abbey Hamlet Inn. Cursed Sterling is used to buy targeted loot boxes for whichever piece of gear you’re aiming for. However, the Cursed Crowns can be used to purchase Set-Bonus gear from the Overcharged and Elementally Charged sets. Please find below the list of rewards available to purchase from the vendor:
